Before the Coffee Gets Cold

The premise of this story was fascinating and the underlying message shared on the final pages was profound and thought-provoking. However, the method of delivery left me distracted and frustrated.

Perhaps there was something lost in translation from the native Japanese prose, but the movement from one action and emotion to the next often felt stagnant or repetitive. Although no fault of the author, I personally found it difficult to keep the characters and their relationships to each other straight in my mind while reading this book.

I suspect this is the type of story (having time travel at its core) that warrants several reads to recognize each breadcrumb dropped along the path and to appreciate its significance in the overall flow of the character's lives.

Even though I found it difficult to stay motivated while reading this offering, I always believe a story is placed before us to deliver an important message, like some talisman of wisdom for our journey through life. In that respect, this one did not disappoint.

No matter what happens in the past or future, the present never changes. But that doesn't mean we can't, and that just might be the most powerful realization that any story can provide.

I didn't flip through these pages with reckless abandon like other stories I've devoured in the past. The figurative coffee got cold before I could finish it, but lukewarm coffee still has the power to provide that same dose of metaphorical caffeine for the soul, no matter its temperature.
